Samenvatting

The transportation sector accounts for 22 percent of global energy use and 27 percent of global carbon emissions. Real time monitoring and feedbacksystem is crucial to change individual travel behavior. This paper propose EnergyPulse system, an integrated platform which can monitor the road transport energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission in real time along with live traffic condition. EnergyPulse collects the real time mobility information from multiple data sources and combine it with energy consumption model and greenhouse gas emission model to produce green traffic index in order to encourage people moving in a more sustainable way. The motivation, functionality and framework of EnergyPulse system is described in detail. Then a case study in Shenzhen is carried out and the preliminary research result shows the usability of EnergyPulse system. The data sources available to us from Shenzhen include 6,000 GPS-equipped floating cars, 100 fixed point sensors, and 5 million smart cards for both buses and the metro. From this data, the authors can not only exactly understand the movements of people and vehicles, but also more precisely measure the transportation energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in urban transport. EnergyPulse works as real time persuasive techonology to facilitate better interaction between people, vehicles, and cities will ultimately change theway that the city and its inhabitants consume energy and produce emission.
