Samenvatting

Speed limit enforcement is required to reduce the number of accidents and increase road safety. In the UK, the police enforce the traffic laws. The Association of Chief Police Officers developed the National Road Policing Strategy to secure an environment where the individual can use the roads with confidence, free from death, injury, damage and fear. This can be achieved by improving road user behaviour, safer roads and safer vehicles. Three operational priorities were identified as having the most potential for improving road safety: speed, drink driving and seat belt wearing. The police are working with local highway authorities to improve road safety and reduce road accidents. Examples of this partnership approach in the Thames Valley Region are the Traffic Strategy Group and the Safer Roads Campaign (Hypothecation pilot or Netting Off project).
