This article complements that published in January 1994 (see IRRD 864792) and examines how design and specification can influence factors affecting stability. The authors discuss the structural parameters determining the resistance to overturning and the direction in which the centre of gravity of the load and body is raised. Measurements that relate to a tilt-test of sideways stability are illustrated. Tests of vehicles under eccentric load are easier to arrange, they are more rapid and less costly than tilt-table tests, but the latter are more dependable. Typical chassis side-bending and chassis-twisting forces are shown, and methods from which sideways stability can be assessed are discussed. Tests have shown that tyres only make asmall contribution directly to the compliance of the rear hinge. Examples are given of methods available to improve chassis stability. Comprehensive data on suspension stiffness is not always available, but simple tests are described to determine chassis and suspension stiffness
