A large part of transport demand is conducted by walking in Indian cities irrespective of their population size. However, pedestrian facilities are grossly inadequate in almost all cities. Consequently, pedestrians are the major victims of road accidents. This paper discusses the characteristics of pedestrians in Indian cities, examines their problems and recommends that the present levels of walk trips should be increased or at least be maintained through various engineering, enforcement and education measures which will facilitate the movement of pedestrians and enhance their safety.
