Samenvatting

In the working out of a sustainably-safe road traffic, uniformity of traffic facilities is an important point of particular attention. The uniformity of rural access roads could be improved by introducing a middle carriageway breadth for motor vehicles. Its marking consists of broken lines. The rest of the space consists of two edge markings (sometimes in red asphalt) and is meant for cyclists. Such lanes are called 'non-compulsory (bicycle) lanes'. In an earlier publication (See ITRD E201401), SWOV reported a comparison between access roads with and without such a motor vehicle area. SWOV then carried out a study of traffic situations on roads where there was originally no such area and later one was installed (before-and-after studies). At each location, the driving speeds and position on the road (in the lateral direction) were measured, and they were reported separately. The present report is a summarized, final version of six partial studies. For two of these studies see ITRD E203770 and E203834. This
