Samenvatting

The report gives a description of a test with a traffic restricted zone in a residential area. A zone was created when a peripheral street around two residential areas was completed in 1976. Motor traffic was restricted in several streets, thus forming a through traffic free zone. At the same time separate shortcut connections for cycle and pedestrian traffic were created within the zone. Apart from the fact that through traffic had been suspended in the zone, the test results showed that car traffic speed and noise levels decreased in most of the residential streets. The test period lasted one year and seven months. During this period the number of accidents was lower than during the seven year period before the test. The attitude test results show great diversities between different categories of residents. These diversities can be attributed to the different categories' divergent frames of reference, traveling habits, traveling routes, transport amenities and living conditions in general. Regular car users (drivers and passengers) showed a distinctly negative attitude to the reorganization. Those who did not own a car and seldom used one, were more positive. This applied mostly to elderly people, parents with young children and teenagers.
