Samenvatting

In most developing countries, scant attention is paid to the environmental effects arising out of the development of highway transport infrastructure. There has been an enormous increase in road transport, especially in urban areas, along with rapid growth of population and economic and industrial acti- vity. The result is that regional communities frequently suffer from environmental pollution caused by fumes, liquids noise, vibrations, dust and so on. The paper examines the concept of the highway transport environment, and describes how environmental considerations are currently being incorpora- ted into the priorities and organizations of the Royal Thai Highways Department in response to he growing awareness and concern felt by people throughout the country.
