The paper presents an integrated method to control on line the environmental state of a city using ATT-IRTE systems and a study conducted to define a methodology to identify the strategy that applied on line in Urban Traffic Management Systems reduces the most critical effects of the atmospheric pollution due to the traffic. The first part of this paper describes the architecture of the integrated ATT systems that in 5T (the IRTE system of the city of Turin) allows control of the traffic and transport demand for improving traffic efficiency, as well as a better exploitation of transport resources and a reduction of pollution. The optimum common strategy that is applied by all the 5T subsystems is settled by the Town Supervisor subsystem that identifies it not only according to the traffic conditions but also taking into account the environmental status. The second part of the paper summarises the results of a study conducted to identify the integrated method that the Supervisor has to implement. A methodology was found that provides an optimum strategy to obtain a reduction of the number of critical links with the highest pollutant concentration values, and also a light reduction of the total pollutant concentration on the whole network, without penalising the traffic efficiency.
