Environmental management : the coming international dimension.

Samenvatting

The setting up in 1991 of SAGE (Strategic Advisory Group on the Environment) by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and the International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) to recommend international standards for the environmment is outlined. By 1993 the following areas had been identified for the development of standards a) environmental management systems, b) environmental audits, c) environmental labelling, d) environmental performance evaluation, e) life cycle analysis and f) environmental aspects in product standards. A number of technical committees were set up to consider these areas. The role of the British Standards Institute in influencing SAGE decisions is outlined. Environmental decisions is outlined. Environmental Auditing has been found to be of particular importance. The relevance of environmental management standards to the field of transport is considered.
