Samenvatting

This paper outlines the investigations undertaken to develop a Water Sensitive Road Design (WSRD) for a Park and Ride project in Melbourne. Challenges faced by the design team included a site with significant spatial constraints and an open waterway forming the site boundary. The paper outlines how the WSRD was included into the design. It should be noted that the WSRD had to be included in an already documented final design. The paper includes estimates of the WSRD's performance and cost. The final design has been constructed and makes use of cleverly incorporated infiltration basins to treat the runoff for suspended solids and heavy metals, as well as easy-to-maintain litter traps to remove hard litter from the runoff. This case study provides a good example of the practical application of water sensitive design, and reinforces the importance of considering stormwater quality as a critical aspect for similar works in the future.
