Samenvatting

The Texas Transportation Institute's Environmental Management Program studies ways to limit damage from storm runoff. The Hydraulics, Sedimentation and Erosion Control Laboratory, run jointed by the Texas DOT and TTI focuses on how soil erosion can be reduced after storms, because the most damage occurs as runoff picks up soil particles. The laboratory tests roller temporary erosion control products, sprayed-on materials and flexible channel liners or turf reinforcing mats. A large earthen embankment surrounds a 6-acre pond that is the water source for most tests. There is also a rainfall simulator which has two soil beds with adjustable slopes. Greenhouses supply a controlled environment for growing approved seed mixes to determine how well the vegetation they produce retains soil and reduces water runoff.
