This paper aims to test the generalisability of the Driver Behaviour Questionnaire (DBQ) to a sample of New Zealand drivers of heavy vehicles. The questionnaire contained demographic and background variables including driving experience, preferred driving speed and crash involvement. Factor analysis was performed on the results and the relationships between crash involvement and the main variables were examined through the calculation of product moment correlation coefficients. Finally, hierarchical logistic regression was performed to identify which of the DBQ factor scores significantly improved the prediction of crashes. The findings indicated that New Zealand truck drivers engage in a relatively low level of aberrant driving behaviours. The violations factor was found to be a significant predictor of crash involvement. It is suggested that driver attitudes and beliefs underpinning violating behaviour should be changed.
