Samenvatting

This Workshop was organized on behalf of the Commission of the European Communities' concerted action on "Breakdown in human adaptation: performance decrement". The main aim of the Workshop was to discuss the revelance of different categories of error to the understanding of behavioural processes involved in road accidents and in normal error-free driving. Such discussions pave the way for future modelling of driver error and for its practical applications to a variety of transport problems, including error prevention, error reduction, and the use of errors as indices of driver behaviour, level of skills, and transport system design. This special issue of Ergonomics contains papers based on all 17 main presentations during the Workshop, plus an overview paper which attempts to structure their central themes. For abstracts of the papers presented at the conference see IRRD 834498-834515.
