Samenvatting

Technology now offers an unprecedented level of control over the urban network. But traffic control solutions are often implemented piecemeal so that the full potential is barely realised. Effective traffic management requires greater systems integration, and a joined-up strategy that delivers tangible benefits for traffic managers and the travelling public alike. This article discusses a project by Essex County Council which created a Traffic Control Centre (TCC) as a hub for managing the existing network. Its purpose is to react to congestion, detecting incidents as soon as they happen, allowing coordinated strategies to be implemented in response to the incident in order to keep traffic moving. Also discussed are the technologies adopted by the TCC operators. For the covering abstract see ITRD E139966.
