Samenvatting

An exclusive bus lane has been constructed on the Kwinana Freeway, Perth between Canning Interchange and the Narrows Bridge. The $9.3 million project which was developed and managed by a joint management group consisting of representatives of the Main Roads Department (MRD), the Metropolitan (Perth) Passenger Transport Trust (`Transperth') and the WA Police Department enables buses to bypass regularly congested areas on the northbound carriageway in the morning peak period. The decision to proceed with construction of the bus lane followed research and development and a successful two month full scale trial of a contra-flow bus lane early in 1987. This paper presents a review of the contra-flow bus lane contra-flow bus lane proposal and outlines the reasons for adopting the with flow alternative. The main objectives to be achieved by the introduction of the exclusive bus lane are listed and specific design features are highlighted. The role and responsibility of the three State Government agencies involved is discussed. The paper includes some preliminary comments following the first two months of operation.
