A literature report is presented of the state of affairs relevant to the estimation of speed and distance by traffic participants, in particular by drivers of vehicles. A dis- tinction has been made between the part of the "own" movement and the "movement of the other". An answer is tried to be given on: (1) What is known about the part played by errors in the estimation of speed and dis- tance in the occurrence of traffic accidents (2) What is the relation between the subjec- tive estimation of speed and distance and their objective values under various circum- stances, (3) What part is played by speed and distance estimation in car following behavi-- our, overtaking and gap- acceptance manoeu- vres, and (4) what measures can be applied to improve the estimation of speed.
