The introduction recalls that the explosive expansion of the motor-vehicle and the ever greater losses in human lives have incited several countries and some international organizations to fix standards and to enforce regulations on the safety of vehicles; some of the measures taken belonging to the active field (prevention), others to the passive one (protection). Braking, which belongs to the first field, is then examined.
