Samenvatting

Efforts to improve Alps crossing are envisaged in France, Switzerland and Austria. In any case, infrastructure investments are costly and can only be the result of a long term planification. On behalf of the French Railways (SNCF), the Dutch centre for Transportation Research Training and Consultancy (NEA) has attempted to simulate future transport through the Alps according to several scenarios of new rail infrastructure: in France (a tunnel at Modane) and in Switzerland (a new Gothard tunnel). Conclusions of the study focus on the great potential which is opened to rail transport in Europe and enlighten differences in results, according to the level of analysis in a European context or at national level.
