Samenvatting

In both interior and public lighting, the ultimate aim of lighting design is to create a luminance pattern in the visual field that meets the requirements of visual performance, visual comfort, and economy. Roadway lighting design can be based on requirements for roadway surface luminance since the road surface occupies the main part of the visual field. In the last 20 years, European countries have attempted to solve luminance design problems in a way suitable for practical application. This period of research appears to be ending. Meanwhile, the luminance method of roadway lighting, as described in this paper, is becoming increasingly popular in European countries.
