The European exhaust emission legislation originally aimed at controlling CO and HC. This was done through an inner city traffic type of driving cycle. The control of NO was later simply added to this procedure. The effects of the legislation sofar are combined to city traffic conditions. They comprise a significant reduction in CO and HC, but a noticable increase in NO. Engine emission characteristics in other than city traffic conditions have not noticeably changed since 1970. The effect of emission legislation on fuel consumption sofar has been beneficial.
