This yearbook provides general statistics for 15 European Union Countries, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, the European Economic Area, and comparative values where available for the USA, Canada and Japan. The statistics are grouped under the headings: age and gender; life and life risks; health and safety; family life; international migration; non-national citizens; education; people in the labour market; consumption and spending; housing; land use and environment; pollution; agricultural chemicals; recycling; economic growth; contribution to output by industry; government expenditure including social protection; enterprises and activities in Europe (including tourism and transport); and EU economics. Separate brief details are given of population, total area, gross domestic product, imports/exports; unemployment, railways/motorways, production, inflation rates and education for the EU candidate countries (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Turkey). Annexes describe the European Union's institutions, other agencies and organisations, a detailed timeline since 1948 for the development of European unity including the EU, a glossary of terms used in the statistical tables, a geographical nomenclature, a numerical classification of economic activities, and addresses of Eurostat data shops in various countries.
