A practical application of queuing theory has been demonstrated in this paper on the basis of a traffic management study carried out in the recent past. It was observed that a severe problem of movement of long distance buses existed in the Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT), Kashmere gate, Delhi. The problem was due to stream of buses arriving and departing from the terminus causing chaotic situation and untidy formation of multiple queues. The problem was sorted out first by analyzing the arrival and departure of time of buses at entry and exit gates of the terminus and then noting the availability of the bays to accommodate the buses. For this a simple queuing model was calibrated and applied. It was shown that if the time of parking inside the bus bays were realistically set which could be different for different hours, and if some reorientation of parking lanes were made, the terminus should be able to handle about 200 percent extra load of present situation and traffic management would be smooth.
