Samenvatting

The paper describes some interim findings of a three-year research project to access the impact and effectiveness of a trial scheme concerning the introduction of voluntary 20 mph speed zones in Scotland during 1998. The study design allows the analysis of the effects of such speed zones in different types of residential area. This indicates that the advisory speed control may work better in self-contained areas, with little through-traffic, with strong community-based identities, to support self-enforcement.
