Samenvatting

Increasing restraint use is one of the government's highest road safety priorities. Whilst considerable progress has been made, it is recognised that further increases in restraint use will have a substantial impact on road trauma figures and, hence, the division of road safety is implementing an ongoing program to that end. This research was commissioned as part of an exercise to evaluate two elements of the 1988 programme, namely a press and radio campaign aimed at young adults (relating to crash forces, a fine increase and perception of enforcement levels) and a television and press campaign aimed at parents (relating to a fine increase and enforcement). Specific research objectives were set as follows: recall of publicity campaigns; knowledge of, and attitudes to, the increased fine; perceptions of the level of enforcement of the restraint use laws; knowledge of the restraint use laws; and self reported behavioural changes resulting from the campaigns. The research took the form of telephone interviews with 300 young persons and 300 parents chosen at random from the Adelaide telephone district directory, and was conducted from central telephone interviewing facilities at marketing house during late May and early June 1988.
