Samenvatting

Over the past ten years, the use of alcohol ignition interlocks for convicted DWI offenders has expanded rapidly. Over 30 jurisdictions in the United States have legislation authorizing the installation of an ignition interlock in the vehicles of persons convicted of a DWI offence. In 1990, Alberta became the first province in Canada to introduce a pilot alcohol ignition interlock program for persons convicted of a second or subsequent DWI offence. Since then, the program has become permanent and has expanded to include first-time DWI offenders as well. This paper presents an overview of the Alberta ignition interlock program and provides preliminary findings on its effectiveness. (A)
