In August 1985 an experimental road section that incorporated different asphalt additives was constructed near Bend, Oregon. Ten sections were constructed using mix designs furnished by the additive supplier or by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). In this paper are described the experimental study, including the mix design process, and the construction process, including quality control data and unit prices. Preliminary data on mix properties and field performance are also presented. Significant findings include (a) mix design techniques used by the additive suppliers are, in some cases, not well defined or documented; (b) mix design results obtained by ODOT after construction differ slightly from those recommended by the additive suppliers; (c) there were no major problems during construction of the different mixes; (d) there are significant differencesin the preliminary mix properties of additive types; and (e) the performance of all of the test sections after 1 year is good.(A).
