Evaluation of breakway lightpoles for use in highway medians. Paper prepared for the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Highway Research Board HRB, Washington, D.C., January 1973.

Crash tests were conducted to determine the impact behaviour of median-mounted luminary supports and secondary collisions of vehicles striking poles on a traffic lane. A relative hazard index was developed to describe the relative hazard created by the proximity and frequency of luminary supports. This index suggests that median-mounted luminary systems produce less hazard than house-side systems for median widths of 30 ft or greater. (See also PB- 1667).
