New Zealand has employed a range of countermeasures over the last 20 years, in an attempt to reduce the cost and suffering associated with drinking driving accidents. These have ranged from the mandatory blood sampling of suspected drinking drivers, blitzing levels of enforcement, harsher penalties lowering the legal limit for drinking and driving, publicity, and Random Stopping. Some of the countermeasures have proved to be more effective than others.
