Samenvatting

'SMARTWALK TSUKUBA' is an information service program devised and led by the Kanto Regional Development Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (KRDB). It is part of an intelligent transportation systems (ITS) effort to offer services on information and route guidance to pedestrians and transit users. This paper discusses the system outline, features, evaluation test, and consequent outcome of the test. Still further, consideration is given as to how and what pedestrian assistance should be provided. Test services were operational during the period from November 2000 to March 2001 in the city of Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. The outcome of the evaluation is discussed to provide a perspective of ITS development.
