Samenvatting

The long-established kbr pellet technique for ir analysis has been adapted for analyzing asphaltic materials. The procedure is highly reproducible and produces spectra that can be compared, with no normalization or other correction beyond normal background subtractionand baseline zeroing. Analysis of oven-aged and hot-mix asphalt samples by ft-ir, viscosity, penetration, and gel permeation chromatography provides coparisons for studies of asphalt aging. In a limitedstudy, viscosity and penetration values for the hot-mix and for thin-film and rolling thin-film, oven-aged residues agreed quite well. However, the gpc and ft-ir analyses showed some significant differences. This paper appears in transportation research record no. 1228, Asphalt mixtures and asphalt chemistry.
