One of the possible solutions to the problem of offering more mobility without negatively impacting the territory is offered by advanced transport telematics (ATT) Technologies which aim at increasing the efficiency in the use of the existing infrastructures. The CAPITALS Project, financed by EU DG XIII (Telecommunications) was started in 1996 with the purpose of implementing, testing and validating several transport telematics applications in 5 European capital cities: Berlin, Brussels, Madrid, Paris and Rome. The systems implemented can be globally referred to four application areas: a) Traffic information (Berlin and Paris); b) Multi-modal information (Paris, Brussels and Rome), c) advanced traffic control strategies (Brussels and Madrid); d) Demand management (Madrid and Rome). The authors have played the role of overall evaluators of the project: their tasks mainly included keeping strict contacts with the European Commission bodies, guiding the City Evaluation Managers in the preparation of validation plans and analysing the validation results. The work to be presented at the Conference will include the results of the validation activities, and in particular the impacts of the implemented systems on traffic efficiency, energy usage, environment, safety, final and intermediate users acceptance.
