The main objective of this paper was to assess the viability of the utilization of Compressed Natural Gas buses in urban areas. A large Compressed Natural Gas experiment has taken place in Brazil, where a fleet of 150 buses has been operating in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Other cities in that country are also testing the feasibility of this type of operation. A feasibility analysis for this type of vehicle based on data from the Brazilian experience is presented, followed by a report on the public perception of the Compressed Natural Gas bus operation. This is based on an in-depth questionnaire survey carried out in the period October to December 1993. Some brief comparisons are also made with the framework for Compressed Natural Gas bus operation in Great Britain. (Author/publisher).
