Samenvatting

The approaches to older people outlined in this Guide are based upon a multi-disciplinary approach which is designed to maximise penetration among the client group. In this model, members of other professions and representatives from voluntary agencies are actively encouraged to support the RSO in the task of communicating effective road safety messages to older people. Such an approach requires that the RSO fulfils the role of overall coordinator and facilitator of a road safety programme. The contents of this booklet are designed to assist RSOs when preparing presentations to representatives of professional and voluntary agencies as a part of the process of encouraging their participation and support. The objectives of this guide are: (1) To facilitate the development of a multi-disciplinary approach to promoting road safety among older people; and (2) To improve the safety of older people as pedestrians by: i) increasing their awareness of their vulnerability as road users; and ii) persuading them to take positive action to avoid being involved in road accidents as pedestrians.
