This article describes the essential functionality of CombiCom. Major concepts and the design philosophy of the distributed architecture are addressed. The real-time information produced for traffic operators and their clients together with the (potential) logistical and commercial benefits are outlined. Finally the implementation of the system on the Rotterdam-Koln-Verona corridor is presented. The Automatic Identification techniques, and the EDI features of the system are also summarised. (A)
