Samenvatting

Over a period of approximately two months from February 2001, NTT West, in cooperation with the intelligent transportation systems ("ITS") pedestrian assistance social experiment implemented by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Osaka City Government, carried out a field experiment, in the north Osaka area, on a system they had constructed to enable pedestrians to move about comfortably and safely. This system provided various types of information, via mobile packet transmission and Bluetooth wireless LAN as communication media, for PDAs and PDCs carried by pedestrians including those with impaired mobility. Their report shows the contents and the results of the field experiment as well as the outcome of discussions on future directions for this type of system.
