Samenvatting

Motorway traffic parameter estimation and control, including direct interaction between the control center and on-board devices for driving assistance and early warning, may exhibit very different performance, according to the capabilities of the technology used for sensors and communication devices and networks. In this paper, the performance of an integrated system based on advanced radar and telecommunications technology is investigated. The paper highlights the characteristics of the tracking and prediction mechanisms used for processing and updating a traffic picture continuously in space and time, both at intelligent radar stations deployed along the road and at the control center. The performance is studied on the ground of experimental results from a field trial, with respect to two different uses of the system, as a driving aid in poor visibility conditions and as a powerful estimator of aggregated traffic parameters.
