Samenvatting

This article describes research whose aim was to obtain accurate statistical data on: (A) passenger car operation, such as engine speeds and fuel consumption; and (B) vehicle journeys, such as travel times, or duration. 35 passenger cars were selected at random. The vehicles were tuned and fitted with data acquisition systems and sensors which measured the following data at one second time intervals; speed; engine speed, throttle position, depression at the intake manifold; fuel consumption; engine water and oil temperatures; intake air temperature; use of the manual choke, and use of the windscreen wipers, rear window heater, and cooling system fan.
