Samenvatting

This report presents the outcome of an international Delphi study among experts, carried out between May 1997 and October 1997. The objective of the study was to explore future prospects of electronic driver support systems. Although some systems are currently available on a small scale, the study focuses on opportunities for large-scale implementation, as this could contribute significantly to public policy goals. To be more particular, the study aimed at clarifying initial market characteristics, today's barriers which obstruct introduction and/or further developments, and public policy measures which should be taken to overcome these barriers. The conclusion is, that despite the large efforts done in the past, future developments not as obvious as they are often claimed, and will be dominated by technological progress, developments of consumers acceptance and future legislation. Public policy making is required within each of this fields in order to guide developments towards technical solutions that improve total traffic performance. (A)
