Samenvatting

The author discusses the aquisition of driving experience through mileage exposure and social exposure. A study is outlined of novice drivers in The Netherlands who were considered to be involved in accidents due to their over confidence. A course was arranged with the aim of `resensitising' them to danger. A number of examples are given of traffic behaviour which has provided driving models for children from an early age. These include the influence of educational films and television as well as real life situations. The way in which the skill of driving is learnt is discussed. The author considers that modelling is a fundamental determinant of driving behaviour and that driver instruction only contributes marginally.
