Samenvatting

A number of trials with the introduction of audible facilities at traffic signals to reinforce the pedestrian displays have been conducted, and an Australian standard for these devices now exists.Practice in Australian states varies in both the type of devices installed, the extent to which sites are treated, and the hours of operation of the devices. Current experience indicates that the cost of audible facilities at traffic signals is in the order of two to ten per cent of the cost of fully signalising an intersection, which is considered to be highly cost- effective.
