This report highlights the potential of speed assistants especially within poor visibility, weather and surface conditions. These assistance systems shall help drivers to derive safe driving speeds. By means of a literature analysis, the current state of knowledge on factors influencing speed-related accidents, and the state of the art regarding existing speed assistant systems (SAS) were investigated. The main focus was on the effectiveness and system limitations of current Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems, their acceptance and effectiveness. Based on this, police and in-depth accident data were examined with regard to these influences and other conspicuous features in order to define possible addressed accidents by different variants of SAS.
