According to the specifications for the design of public roads-alignment, the design speed of a road should correspond with the expected 84%-speed of vehicles (passenger cars) adopted when there are no restrictions on wet, clean road surfaces. However, the specifications do not yet provide a safe procedure for determining a speed profile. Within the framework of this study such a speed profile is developed; the dependence of the cruising speed on design parameters such as curvature, width of the roadway and sight distance has been proven.
