The quality of data of the 1978 Fatal Accident Reporting System data file is evaluated. Errors in the FARS data can affect statistical inferences of researchers and NHTSA's policy decisions. Procedures for assessing the extent of error arising from interpretation of source documents and are developed; procedures for assessing the extent of transcription error in submitted oases and for estimating missing data of the FARS file are also developed.
