Samenvatting

This article recommends measures that will aid in safer driving at night. Safety officials are urged to adopt a simple-to understandnight driving index, similar to the wind chill factor, that would provide drivers with a 1-to-10 warning of night conditions they are likely to face when taking to the road. it is noted that the range of vision and critical perception of a 20/40 daytime driver may be reduced by 90% after sun set. Also aging affects capacity of the eye for light transmission, and 3% of all drivers in the united states have only one functional sight. color blindness is a problem in 1% of the male population, as is undiagnosed glaucoma. It is also noted that tinted windshields are a serious impediment to night vision. Roadways and highway should be designed and maintained with vision as a paramount consideration. There is a need for research in this area.
