Samenvatting

The mechanistic approach based on dissipated energy or fracture mechanics can be used to analyse the fatigue properties of asphalt concrete from laboratory result regardless of whether the tests are stress or strain controlled. In this paper, the results of a four point bending beam fatigue test are interpreted by dissipated energy approach. A relationship was found between initial dissipated energy and the number of cycles to failure. An exponential equation was developed which relate the initial dissipated energy to fatigue life. The relationship between mixture stiffness and dissipated energy was investigated. It was found that dissipated energy could be used to obtain fatigue properties of asphalt concrete without performing a time consuming fatigue test. A surrogate model chosen from limited mixes was developed to estimate the fatigue life of asphalt mixes based on initial mix stiffness and initial phase angle.
