Samenvatting

The main purpose of this Handbook is to provide guidelines for conduct of FOTs and NDS (Naturalistic Driving Study) although, for simplicity, in the following text, the name FOT is used and differences between the two kinds of studies are summarised when relevant. It walks the reader through the whole process of planning, preparing, executing, analysing and reporting an FOT and it gives information about aspects that are especially relevant for a study of this magnitude, such as administrative, logistic, legal and ethical issues. Another aspect of the Handbook is to pave the road for standardisation of some aspects of FOTs, which would be helpful for cross-FOT comparisons. It has to be kept in mind, though, that many traffic parameters in different European countries differ substantially. The original Version and Version 2 were produced by the FESTA project consortium. An update to Version 3 of the FESTA manual was performed by a working group in the FOT-NET 2 Support Action based on the results of seminars organised in the previous FOT-NET project and feedback from users of Version 2. Version 4 took into account the feedback received after the publication of Version 3 for Open Consultation in the period July-August 2011 and during a presentation workshop in Gothemburg (8 September 2011). Version 5 is the result of the activity of five Working Groups in the FOT-NET 2 Support Action during 2012 and 2013. The focus of Working Groups was on the following items: Data Analysis, Events and Incident Definition, Legal and Ethical Issues, Impact Assessment and Scaling Up, Data Sharing. The Working Groups proceeded in parallel, organizing dedicated workshops and setting up links to running FOTs. Intermediate progress was presented to the main ITS International congress. A final workshop was then organized in Turin (4-5 November 2013) amongst experts in order to validate the content to insert and agree amendments to the new version. (Author/publisher)
