Samenvatting

This paper presents results of field studies conducted in Houston, Texas, to evaluate the performance of two innovative approaches for managing traffic during center lain maintenance operations on an urban freeway. The results of the studies indicated that, compared to the multi-lane closure strategy commonly used at center lane worksites (closure of an exterior lane and one or more middle lanes) both approaches significantly increased workzone capacity. In addition, both strategies were used without degrading workzone safety or traffic operation.
