Full- scale testing was performed at three operational gravel arrester beds in Pennsylvania and at two research beds at the Pennsylvania Transportation Institute (PTI). The PTI beds contain two different gravels- crushed limestone and uncrushed river gravel. Fifty two tests were performed to establish the effects of gravel type, gravel depth (0.375 to 2.44 metres), vehicle entry speed (16 to 96 km /h), vehicle type, and vehicle load.
