Samenvatting

The 5th Generation Traffic Controller development project objective could be summarised thus; to develop a traffic controller to meet a global expectation which embodies a cost-effective solution incorporating reliability, user friendly operation, pre-emptive traffic management control and an ability to evolve with user requirements. In order to contemplate the philosophy of a '5th Generation' traffic controller, a brief insight into the nature of the development stages (earlier generations) of the traffic controller provides a reference frame for the reader. This brief overview provides the reader with an insight into the difference between each generation of traffic controller. Historically this overview is borne out of the author's knowledge of the Australian traffic control industry and while the author recognises unique developments in other countries, this compilation is an attempt to apply general categorisation rules to a range of technology.
