This report consists of two parts. The first consists of a general section, which reports on the 1990 OECD seminar on Road Tunnel Management and which provides a list of publications associated with it. The second part consists of a special section which develops and comments on a number of special topics. The first section provides a summary of the papers presented at the seminar. These covered: (a) management and operation; (b) environment; (c) safety; (d) the transport of hazardous loads; and (e) policy and future developments. The special section considers: (a) the dispertion of vitiated air; (b) the effect of clean engines on the power required to operate ventilation systems; (c) user behaviour; (d) tunnel repair; (e) the transport of hazardous loads; and (f) costs. Based on information from a variety of European tunnels, a number of findings are listed particularly in relation to costs. Areas are highlighted where future research is recommended.
